Titik 0 Kilometer: The Enchanting Center of Yogyakarta City
Yogyakarta is a city that is unique in its layout. It was first established according to a basic principle of a human in a macrocosmic system. The layout has an imaginary line that connects five important places that stretch from the south sea to the summit of mt. Merapi on the north. In between these two 'polars' are 'Panggung Krapyak', Kraton Yogyakarta and 'Tugu Jogja'. Each place symbolizes a certain meaning.
This article is not focusing on the symbols and philosophy, but rather on a very popular spot through which the line stretches. Anyone know that it's called "titik 0 km" (0 km spot). This spot is at the very center of Yogyakarta City, at a crossroad, where historically colonial buildings stand. Those buildings still function as they are supposed to be: BNI, Kantor Pos (Post Office), Bank Indonesia, Gedung Agung (one of Indonesia's Presidential Palaces), Serangan Umum 1 Maret Monument and Benteng Vredeburg. In front of each building, there is a pedestrian area that connects to one another. Some plants, benches and lamps make up a very beautiful city scene. No wonder that it becomes a must-visit spot in Yogyakarta. An evening/late afternoon setting when the sun sets is the best time to enjoy the atmosphere. Come and see yourself!
