A Tale from Sojiwan
The reliefs sculpted on the foot of
Candi Sojiwan carry Buddhism moral values through fables.
The Preservation of Candi Sojiwan has
long been started. After the search of stones and anastylosis, the main Candi
Sojiwan could finally be reconstructed. The reconstruction was started in 1996 by
the Office of Ancient Relics Preservation (Balai
Pelestarian Peninggalan Purbakala) of Central Java.
The reconstruction has started in
1996 and in 2006 it has reached the body of the Candi. However, because of the 27
May 2006 earthquake, the Candi got decayed again. After the earthquake, was
reconstructed without using columns. The stones used to fill in the Candi were
changed into andesites that were supported by iron anchor. The grouts between
the stones were filled with hydraulic mortars. Particular parts where there was
force of pull; the grouts were filled using bligon
(it is still hard to find what bligon
means).
There was an archeological
investigation during the reconstruction. The latest study has found out that
there is a structure of ditch surrounding the Candi (some part appears to be
visible), a structure of fence in the yard I on the north and on the east (has
been reconstructed), a structure of fence in the yard II on the north (some
part has been reconstructed) and two structures of Candi Pewara Stupa in a row
in the yard II on the north (one of them has been reconstructed).
